Rafael Toral
Guitar, gesture and the space of sound
Silence is not emptiness: it is room for decisions.

EDITORIAL PERSPECTIVE
Silence is not emptiness: it is room for decisions.
Born in Lisbon in 1967, Rafael Toral emerged on the international experimental scene in the 1990s. The first phase of his artistic path, from 1994 to 2003, includes works that transform electric guitar and electronics into long tones and resonant fields. Albums from this period include *Sound Mind Sound Body*, *Wave Field* and the important *Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance*. Launched in 2004 and completed in 2017, the Space Program shifted his focus towards self-built electronic instruments and a post-free-jazz mindset, in which the performer’s physical gesture shapes musical flow. *Open Space* (2020; CD edition 2026) is the retrospective he curated of that period. During an earlier period of his life, Toral also practised Zen and martial arts; these are past practices, not current ones. From the return to guitar on *Spectral Evolution* (2024) to the jazz standards reimagined on *Traveling Light* (2025), he continues to bring form, listening and space into conversation.
